June is Men’s Health month. This time is set aside to raise awareness about health issues affecting men. This isn’t just for men though. The women in their lives can learn more too! Anyone can become more knowledgeable on the health issues impacting men!
According to the Men’s Health Network, men die at higher rates for 9 of the top 10 causes of death. This includes deaths from cancer, diabetes, suicide, and accidents; and diseases of the heart, kidney, and liver.
There are many things to keep in mind. The number one cancer killer for men is lung cancer. Often times diseases such as breast cancer are only thought of for women but can afflict men as well. Osteoporosis is a bone disease that was typically seen as a women’s disease but is now seen to affect men as well. (https://menshealthnetwork.org/lib.php?d=healthfacts.pdf)
May was Women’s Health Month. Women also have many unique health concerns. Some of which include pregnancy, reproductive health, and maternal health issues. Men can be educated on women issues as well! (https://www.cdc.gov/women/index.htm)
Four Corners Health Department wants to encourage both men and women to take steps to care for their health! One way to do this is to get regular checkups and screenings done. Find out what you should be checked for here: http://getitchecked.com/
