Join us in Commemorating World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims in Nebraska
The National Safety Council – Nebraska Chapter (NSCN), Nebraska Highway Safety Office, Keep Kids Alive – Drive 25 and the City of Omaha Traffic Division are pleased to invite the community to join us in commemorating the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. This global event serves as a moment to honor the lives lost and families impacted by roadway crashes in our state.
In 2022, Nebraska saw a staggering 244 lives tragically lost due to roadway incidents. These are not mere statistics; they were individuals with dreams, families, and futures abruptly cut short. The impact of these losses reverberates through our communities, urging us to come together in solidarity and remembrance.
The event will take place at the new NSCN facility at 3111 Oak View Drive on Friday, November 17, 2023 at 1pm, where we will honor the memory of those who perished in these crashes. It is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of road safety and the measures needed to prevent further tragedies. We will have a ceremony featuring guest speakers, community leaders, and a moment of silence to pay tribute to the lives lost. Mayor Stothert has been invited to attend. We encourage those who have lost a loved one to bring a photo of your family member.
In 2022, more than 46,000 people were killed in roadway crashes in the U.S., according to the National Safety Council. While this is a slight (0.3%) decrease from the prior year, this is of little comfort, as 2021 saw a 16-year high in U.S. traffic deaths and the largest annual percentage increase in the nation’s reporting history.
We encourage everyone to attend and stand in solidarity with the families affected by these heartbreaking losses. Your presence and support will help us advocate for greater awareness, improved safety measures, and ultimately, a reduction in these devastating incidents.
