This FREE training is being offered through a partnership of Region V Systems and the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Behavioral Health.

Regular booster trainings are necessary for continued retention and growth in the effective communication skill of Motivational Interviewing (MI).

 

Join Region V Systems on September 9, 2022, when we host  industry expert, Brenda Jennings, for two unique MI Booster trainings to practice your MI skills.  Attendees can choose to attend one or both sessions.

 

Prerequisite

All attendees must meet one or both of the following criteria to sign up for one or both booster sessions.

  • Attendees must have completed a Phase I OR II MI training prior to the booster offering.
  • Attendees must have completed previous MI training (not just a brief overview) consisting of no less than 4 hours that included MI Spirit, OARS and IQLEDGE change talk techniques.

NOTE: This training IS NOT an introductory training to MI. Boosters assume attendees have had previous MI training, therefore, an extensive review or introduction of skills is not offered. Booster training sessions are not appropriate for someone who does not meet the above prerequisite.

MI Booster Session #1 – 8:00 – 11:30 am

Booster Session #1 is for participants who wish to increase their rapport and active listening skills by way of strengthening their MI Spirit elements and OARS skills. Special attention will be given to enhancement of reflections.

This MI Booster will focus on boosting the following three specific areas of MI skills through various role plays and small group activities by:

  1. Enhancing the natural use of MI Spirit, particularly partnering and empathizing with clients to help build rapid rapport and trust.
  2. Deepening the use of open questions and affirmations within conversations about behavior change to evoke a higher level of self-efficacy within clients.
  3. Increasing the ratio of reflections to questions to a 2:1 ratio to assist in achieving a higher level of active listening to allow the client to feel heard and understood.     An emphasis will be placed on the increase of complex reflections versus simple reflections.

Booster Session #2 – 12:30 – 4:00 pm

Booster Session #2 is for participants who wish to increase client change talk and commitments to change by way of increasing competency and use of the eliciting change talk and strengthening change talk technique. Special attention will be given to IQLEDGE eliciting change talk techniques.

This MI Booster will focus on boosting the following three specific areas of MI skills through various role plays and small group activities by:

  1. Fostering the correct use of the IQLEDGE eliciting change talk techniques which can cultivate client change talk and soften sustain talk, increasing the likelihood of behavior change.
  2. Strengthening change talk by use of EARS techniques to increase client self-efficacy.
  3. Enhancing commitments to change by increasing commitment language and thus increasing client follow through on steps toward behavior change.
